From now through early December, most of what happens in Jamestown happens at one of two places, and they keep different hours. Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, at the foot of the dam on Kendall Road, runs on daylight. Reel Java, at 302 Monument Square, takes over in the evenings, Thursday through Sunday. Most of this season's calendar fits that split. The two nights it doesn't, and the one Saturday where both places line up back to back, are the ones worth planning around.
Daylight belongs to the hatchery
The Visitor/Environmental Education Center at 50 Kendall Road is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of October. From November through December it closes an hour earlier, at 4 p.m. The hatchery stays open year-round except Christmas. That earlier closing time matters more than it sounds, because it decides how much of a November afternoon you can spend down there.
Hatchery Creek is the main reason to go back more than once. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service finished a big rehabilitation and extension of the creek in 2016. It now runs more than a mile, with riffles, pools, runs and a series of step pools that let fish come in from the Cumberland River. The creek is stocked three to four times a week. You can keep five fish per person per day in the upper section, and the lower stretches are catch and release. The upper section is accessible, with reserved parking for handicap permits. Anyone 16 or older needs a Kentucky fishing license and a trout permit.
If you're not fishing, the Nature Explorer Hiking Trail starts just past the visitor center and hatchery building. It's a three-quarter-mile trail of packed dirt and gravel that brings you around to Hatchery Creek. The front desk has a scavenger hunt for the trail, and you can bike it too. Indoors, the exhibit hall has a working honey bee hive, displays on karst terrain, and Dale, an animatronic fish biologist. The gift shop is run by the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery. It sells books, pins, bait, light tackle and home decorations, and every dollar goes back to the hatchery's education and outreach work.
The Friends group also runs the hatchery's fall programs, and almost all of them are daytime events:
- Fly Fishing 101, Saturday, October 17. The class costs $75, and you have to register ahead.
- Beeswax Food Wrap Workshop, Saturday, November 14, 9 to 10 a.m.
- Friends of Wolf Creek NFH meetings on Tuesdays, October 13, November 10 and December 8. The November and December meetings run 1 to 3 p.m.
- Holiday Open House, Saturday, December 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The square picks up when the hatchery winds down
Reel Java's hours fit right in where the hatchery's leave off. The restaurant is closed Monday through Wednesday. It's open Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Every event on its October calendar starts at 6 p.m. or later, at least an hour after the hatchery's visitor center closes in October and two hours after it closes in November.
The place has grown in stages. By its own account, Reel Java started as an informal coffee operation at Timber Pointe and opened on Monument Square in October 2023. It now calls itself a coffeehouse, full-service restaurant, patio, sports bar and bakery. The menu covers breakfast and baked goods, sandwiches, wraps, salads, pizza, burgers and dinner entrées. The drinks range from coffee to cocktails, bourbon flights, beer and wine, and there's ice cream and baked-to-order treats. So one table on the square works for a 7 a.m. coffee or a Friday night set.
Here's what's posted from now into early November. The haunted tours start at 6:30 p.m., and everything else runs from 6 to 9 p.m.:
- Haunted Tours: Family & Kid Friendly, running through October 24, with spooky tales and eerie history.
- Karaoke Night, Thursday, October 8.
- Grace Farmer Wise & Band, Friday, October 16.
- Benny Johnson & Jacob Irvin, Friday, October 23.
- Spooky Trivia Night, Thursday, October 29, free to enter.
- Maggie Cox, Friday, October 30.
- Kristen Hunter, Friday, November 6.
These are dated events. Nothing posted says they repeat every week, so check the calendar before you head over for karaoke on some other Thursday. Lake Cumberland Tourism's calendar also lists the October 8 karaoke as ending at 8 p.m. Reel Java's own page says 9.
The two nights the split breaks
Most weeks, the hatchery and the square don't compete for your evening. This fall, two nights are the exception.
Thursday, October 8. It's fall break week, and the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery are showing The Lorax at the hatchery from 6 to 8 p.m. Karaoke starts on Monument Square at the same hour. A family that starts with the movie could still make the last part of karaoke, since the square goes until 9.
Friday, October 30. Maggie Cox plays Reel Java from 6 to 9 p.m. That same night is the first of two at Halloween Havoc 4 at Lake Cumberland Dragway, 100 Airport Road. Friday's racing is on the back side, on asphalt. Gates open at 3 p.m. Central and the drivers' meeting is at 6. Saturday moves to the concrete front side, with gates at 9 a.m. and the drivers' meeting at noon. If you want both racing and music this Halloween weekend, Saturday's daytime racing leaves your Friday night open for the square.

What the state park lists as closed this year
If your usual fall routine includes Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, check before you go. The park's official page says the restaurant and lounge closed starting December 20, 2025 for renovations, with plans to reopen sometime in 2026. It sends visitors to the park's Facebook page for updates. The same page says the indoor pool and spa are closed for 2026 and the outdoor pool is closed in 2026 too. The Lure Lodge page adds that all lodge rooms are closed for renovations in 2026. Cabins are still listed as bookable seven days a week, and the campground is listed as open year-round, though its water facilities shut down in winter. State Dock's season runs April through October, so the marina side of the park winds down this month.
I couldn't confirm whether Rowena Landing Restaurant has reopened yet. The park itself suggests visiting the hatchery center down the road, which lists it among its top things to do.
December 5 is the day both clocks line up
The first Saturday in December is the one day the hatchery's daytime hours and the square's evening hours fit together back to back.
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Holiday Open House at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, 50 Kendall Road.
- 2 to 4 p.m. You have two hours between events. On a 4 p.m. December day, that's enough daylight to walk the Nature Explorer trail down to Hatchery Creek before you leave.
- 4 to 8 p.m. Christmas on the Square, run by the City of Jamestown on Jamestown Square. It starts right when the hatchery's visitor center closes for the day.
- Until 9 p.m. Reel Java's Saturday hours run an hour past the end of the square event, so you can still sit down for dinner afterward.
I'm Preston Brainard, and I keep an eye on calendars like this one because the hatchery and Monument Square are a big part of everyday life in Jamestown. If you're thinking about a home or some land within a short drive of Kendall Road or the square, I'd be glad to walk you through what's out there, one patient question at a time. Let's Connect.
